| President's Corner |
|
December 1, 2009 - This is my first president's corner since taking over from Dona. My thanks go out to her for many years of service, and to all those who helped contribute to the running of this association over the past 9 years. I have been on the board since 2003, and along with Ted Farmer and Bill Huckabee, we are the current WSTA board that is helping lead the association forward through next year. My sincere thanks to them for their past and continuing service. Soon we will looking back on 2009. Despite the challenges, it was a good year overall. Our summit was a success on many levels despite circumstances. It is clear that the need for a vision that embraces technology and economic development has never been more important. As such, this is an important turning point both for the association and our region. WSTA matured from a small grass roots organization which started in 2000 to become an established regional influence promoting local businesses and our region with business/technology policies to foster economic development. We have held over 100 meetings, 8 summits, and attended numerous other regional and statewide events and conferences. Our meetings are broadcast on two local TV networks and downloadable via the internet, and blogtalkradio shows reach out to listeners everywhere. We have a good start on 2010, with half a dozen events and several trade shows already scheduled thru end of first quarter 2010. We will attend a Governor's conference to help set the direction for Washington's economy and also have monthly conference calls with Technology Alliance to help set policy for education in the state. There is much to be done, and ways you can help. There are three priorities where you can help WSTA move forward. Everyone can play some role. The first priority is to help WSTA by continuing its grass roots traditions to reach out to new businesses and members. We love the regulars but we also need fresh new faces to create strength in numbers. Marketing alone does not bring them on - you do. Members, please use your guest passes. If you have been a past member or attendee, come again and take advantage of our current individual membership promotion.. As a 501c3 non-profit, your membership is tax deductible and you help support our larger mission. The second priority is to encourage other organizations and government leaders to support us. As members of the technology community, our leaders need to hear from you what is possible and why technology is vital to the future of our region. We are all advocates. Third priority and certainly not least, we need to refresh the leadership of WSTA. You may have served before or think you are too busy, but good time management and communication skills, along with consistency, matter more than time available or experience. There are unique opportunities in a board leadership role to represent not just yourself or your firm but this region's premier technology association at many events with the top leaders that are charting our future directions. The vice-president slot is currently open, and we need help with treasurer duties also. We are planning more social events, so this can be a lot of fun also. Our board retreat is in January, and we would love to welcome you aboard. |
